#100: It’s Just An Estimate, You Fool!
We tend to be fast in identifying the bad guy. It gets so much harder if he is actually the good guy in disguise?
We hate to be harsh on ourselves, especially when it comes to our habits. Change turns out to be so painful. That is why we rely on the so called experts or trustworthy organisations to do the hard work for us.
«They say it is ok.»
«I always check the logo on the packaging.»
«I heard about that, but there is no proof.»
I have just watched the Netflix documentary Seaspiracy and I know what they say about those hot-state decisions. Don’t make them. Get a good night’s sleep and digest what you have just learned.
The next day, you will find a way to put things into perspective. There is no doubt another documentary telling the opposite story.
What is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?
BBC jumped on it immediately and fact-checked the claims made in the documentary. The burden of proof becomes the hot potato, although in reality it is more like the reversal of the burden of proof. It is generally not up to the party causing the potential damage to deliver proof that their practice doesn’t do any harm. Instead, the victim, or its advocate in the case of mother nature, ends up with the burden of proof.
What shocked me most were the presumably good guys, the not for profit organisations financed by the very industry they are supposed to critically oversee. We are not meant to shoot the messenger, point taken, but the problem is that they twist the message in such a way that we don’t see clearly anymore.
So what about us? Which category do we fit in?
More important than pointing fingers at ourselves or others is the fact that we have the power to cause change. We vote with our wallet. Every day.
Sylvia Earle, marine biologist, gets the closing words in the documentary:
«Most of the positive and negative things that bring about change in human civilization start with someone. Some «one». And no one can do everything, but every one can do something.»
Nothing I can do today.
All I know is that I am some «one», which comes with real responsibility.
Enough for today.
Let’s get a good night’s sleep.
