#141: What Is Not There?

I love Steve Chapman’s work. What sets it apart isn’t what you would expect. This, that or the other? All wrong, but keep guessing.

The difference lies in what isn’t there. He removes what you would usually expect to see, hear, touch, smell or taste. He wouldn’t be the genius he is if he just eliminated the obvious. Think goal posts on a football field. No, that would be too easy. His work is so much more profound. So what is the big insight?

There is so much we take for granted. So much happening we don’t pay attention to. Let’s call them supporting acts. They are there. And yet, we only start noticing them once they have vanished. Their absence triggers something.

It makes me think what it is I could eliminate, but then I am wondering if that isn’t exactly the challenge?

I don’t know what «that» is until it’s gone.
