I decided to volunteer not because I considered myself a coffee expert or expert of any sort. The Swiss Coffee Festival was an opportunity for me to deep dive into the coffee community I was about to become part of with my own mobile coffee venture.

Saturday morning, 9am. I show up on time and try to find the person in charge of volunteers. My assigned job is «scorekeeper» as communicated to me by email. Fast forward 15 minutes and I get moved from scorekeeping to the masterclass booth to arranging tables and chairs outside to sit on the chair next to the sound technician.

Definitely not a job to get much praise for. Just play the right song at the right time. Lots of potential to annoy the performing barrista and anybody else on stage if I press the wrong button. Luckily, I do the right thing at the right time. I do deliver.

An hour into my job, the person in charge of volunteers comes around and tells me: «You will do the same job tomorrow cause you know your stuff.» One thing less to worry about for her. She feels comfortable.

Thumbs up from the sound technician.

Sure.

I am an expert.

Cause I know my stuff… or rather don’t mess it up for others!
