Could someone please turn down the noise?
This is the story of a project with an unexpected outcome that can only be understood if told backwards:
Use all senses.
Reveal vulnerability.
A stroke of genius?
Don’t understand.
Feedback.
No noise.
Overcome by Emotions.
No audio.
Movie starts.
Audio removed.
Bad audio quality.
Feedback.
Test movie cut.
Scripted recordings discharged.
Script.
Test recording.
Funeral speech.
Feedback.
Lessons learned speech.
Public speaking.
Prompt.
altMBA.
Despite its many unpredictable turns, there are a number of revelations from this project, which I am happy to share:
1. Always have a plan («lessons learned speech»), but be open to succumb to a more intriguing idea («funeral speech»)
2. Adapt your goal as you move along («I always wanted to make a silent movie… nonsense!»)
3. Take risks («Some might not understand»)
4. Don’t try to please everyone («Some won’t understand»)
5. Transform a constraint («audio quality is bad») into an opportunity («eliminate audio»)
6. Leverage the resources available to you («ask a friend how to get rid of the audio and upload the movie if you really can’t do it yourself…»)
7. Think differently («don’t just challenge people to practice silence, but confront them with a form of silence that forces them to use other senses than just their natural reliance on hearing»)
8. Be selfish («what’s in it for me? I can show emotions, this time even with a replay functionality.»)
We all buy headphones with «NoiseGard» technology to eliminate the background noise when listening to music.
Why not do the same next time someone tells a story… is what he says really the story he tries to tell me?
