Have you made your choices?

We have all been living in a multi-optional society for quite some time. We make choices even if we decide not to choose. Interestingly, more often than not we opt for the safe bet. Why so?

Because we make ourselves believe that there is path that prevents us from suffering pain. Emotional pain. Physical pain. Financial pain. All sorts of pain. But then living life as a human being involves pain one way or another, doesn’t it?

I am lying in my hotel bed in Singapore at 4am having chosen not to sleep, although unsure whether this happened entirely out of free will having flown in just the other night… It got me thinking about some of the deliberate choices I have been making lately and why.

I have chosen not to become a better financial expert as I didn’t see the purpose in doing so.

I have chosen to level up my coffee making skills so that the coffee we serve to our customers is at worst very good and at best able to turn a bad day into a memorable one.

I have chosen to bake bread and pastry that our customers find delicious when they get to taste it or, alternatively, decide to queue up for earlier next time because the lady in front of them grabbed the last bite.

I have chosen to serve people who connect with my passion for what I do and how I do it.

I have chosen to invest as much time, energy and money into renovating a rusty vintage truck for it to become a true gem carrying the spirit of the craftspeople dedicating hundreds of hours into making it look and feel uniquely beautiful.

I have chosen to believe in the process rather than the end goal as I am not in control of most of the outcomes anyway.

I have chosen not to prove anything to anyone as there has never been a point in doing so.

I have chosen to be generous to others as it will benefit all of us one way or another.

I have chosen to tell people when I see a sparkle in their eyes as they might not even realize themselves.

I have chosen to be grateful for all encounters and experiences as nothing lasts forever.

Some of the choices appear to be very specific, others more general. Most important of all though, I have chosen to make my own decisions and not to let others decide for me. It feels right. It feels good.
